A Girl's Account of All Things Sports

Tag Archives: Dwight Howard

spl481397_002Things on the court may not be going well for Kobe Bryant, but at least his personal life just got better.  This couple has had a rocky past since 2003 when Kobe admitted to cheating on Vanessa with a 19-year-old girl who claimed that it was not consensual.  Kobe escaped those charges almost as well as he escapes defenders on the court, except it cost him $4 million.  Remember that ring he bought Vanessa?  Well I certainly do and that is how you apologize to a woman scorned!

Things seemed to be going well for the couple up until last year when Vanessa filed for divorce citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.  Apparently Kobe just couldn’t stay faithful.  However, that was a year ago and things have changed severely.  The Lakers are awful and Kobe is no longer single.  The couple took to Instagram and announced their reconciliation.  “We are pleased to announce that we have reconciled.  Our divorce action will be dismissed. We are looking forward to our future together.”  Great news for Kobe, but the Lakers still won’t make the playoffs. You just can’t win them all.

durant-kobeNo Pau Gasol.  No Dwight Howard.  How are the Lakers’ chances looking?  Not too good.  Especially since they are on a five game losing streak looking to play the defending Western Conference Champions, Oklahoma City Thunder.  So if the Lakers don’t play on playing defense tonight, things will get ugly.  At least the Lakers will have point guard Steve Nash this time around.  Last time these two teams met in Oklahoma, Nash and Gasol were both out and the Lakers lost 114-108.

This won’t be a close game, UNLESS that team that played Brooklyn showed up. However, that seems highly unlikely.  There is much else to say about this game considering how badly injured this Los Angeles team is and how poorly they have played.  OKC definitely wins this one and puts the Lakers even further down in the standings.  Lakers or Thunder, who you takin?

los-angeles-lakers-vs-los-angeles-clippersIt’s the battle of Los Angeles. These teams could not be at more different sides of the spectrum right now.  The Clippers are the high flying team that ended 2012 with a 17 game winning streak.  The Lakers are the veteran team that looks like it can’t keep up with the athletics of the NBA anymore.  Even Kobe Bryant, the superstar of Los Angeles basketball, has said that his team is old and cannot keep up with this Clippers team.  He even compared the Clippers to Lakers teams ran by Magic Johnson.  Bryant said, “They’re very spectacular and they’re fun to watch. There’s no question about it. They have higher jumpers than ‘Showtime’ did, though.” He went on to say that the Clippers are expected to blow the Lakers out tonight.

Kobe did you forget which team you play for?  Why are you hyping up your opponent when your team is the one who needs all the support they can get?  Well if the Lakers don’t have any confidence in themselves, I guess neither will I.  I was already picking the Clippers to win tonight, but now that it sounds like Kobe’s heart isn’t in it, I am even more confident with my pick.  Lakers or Clippers, who runs Los Angeles?  Who you takin?

for Dwight Howard to lose this ridiculous headband.  He looks absolutely ridiculous with this thing around his head.  Maybe it is what the Lakers need to turn their season around.

It is unbelievable where both of these teams stand currently.  The New York Knicks currently have a hold of first place in the Eastern Conference, with a record of 16-5.  That includes two blowout victories against the defending NBA Champions Miami Heat.  Carmelo Anthony has really stepped up  into an MVP candidate and Jason Kidd has shown that no matter the age, he is still a force to be reckoned with.

The Lakers have been a mess all season. From firing head coach Mike Brown five games into the season to loss of point guard Steve Nash to the lack of winning from this team, nothing seems to be going right.  Dwight Howard can’t make a free throw if you paid him and head coach Mike D’Antoni might be in over his head.  Superstar Kobe Bryant is known for being confident, but has lately seemed deflated.

However, Kobe has done some incredible things in the Garden.  He is one of those players who loves having the spotlight on him.  So what happens tonight?  Do the Lakers come in and dominate MSG like they know they can do or do the Knicks beat another power house team and cement their place in the NBA?  I have no idea what will happen tonight, but it will interesting.  I predict the Lakers to squeak by just because of how good Kobe has been in the Garden and they need a win so badly.  East Coast vs. West Coast- who you takin?

Who can forget the Dwight Howard saga?  He was the most talked about player since I don’t even remember.  It wasn’t just that he is one of the best centers in the league, but the constant drama surrounding him.  He made it very clear just how unhappy he was in Orlando.  Not the nicest thing to do considering he was adored by the city, but okay they weren’t giving you a championship caliber team to play with. We all get it.  He was such a diva that he said that he would only go to Brooklyn.  So where did Dwight end up?

Well, finally after months and months of speculation and rumors, the superstar made his way to the Los Angeles Lakers. Not quite Brooklyn, but it is definitely an upgrade from Orlando (talent-wise that is).  However, the Lakers have a losing record and Howard has come under fire recently  for his horrendous foul shooting.  Sounds like another famous big man that once wore yellow and purple….

On a side note, happy birthday Dwight Howard!

The Lakers started the season 1-4.  In order to fix this, Jerry Buss fired head coach Mike Brown.  It was sad, but we all saw it coming.  Brown’s coaching never quite fit the Los Angeles Lakers.  The NBA was buzzing about who would coach Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.  Naturally, everyone assumed the “Zen Master” Phil Jackson would make his return to Los Angeles.  It only made sense, he has a great relationship with Kobe and had a new big man to work with, Dwight Howard.  There were so many rumors that it was Jackson’s job for the taking.  It seemed like we were going to see a reunion, but the Lakers shocked everyone.  They instead hired former New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni.   D’Antoni was recovering from knee surgery that he had in the offseason allowing assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff to coach a few games in the interim.    This is how the Lakers have done under each coach:

Brown- 1-4

Bickerstaff- 4-1

D’Antoni- 3-4

It doesn’t sound like the Lakers are responding too week to D’Antoni’s coaching.  To be fair, Dwight Howard has come under fire recently for missing countless free throw attempts.  One bright spot of the season thus far has been Kobe Bryant being the youngest player to reach 30,000 points.  However, no one will ever forget that Mike D’Antoni was chosen over Phil Jackson for a head coaching position.
